Motherhood is a game changer. Suddenly this thing you actually made is handed to you and a deep, fierce love awakens from within that was dormant only one last contraction ago. You’ll protect this precious gift with all you’ve got and figure out a way to make sure that happens.
When my daughter was a toddler, her immune issues were rampant. Taking matters into my own hands, I cleaned up the family’s diet. The first things to go were gluten, dairy and general processed food gar-bage (insert French accent here). Instead of going with an “un-version”, we completely replaced them. Bread at meals morphed into sweet potato fries; protein rich chickpeas and cannellini beans went into soups, spreads and salads; we also ate less meat that took its energy toll on her little bodkin.
The kids loved it, and quite frankly didn’t know any differently – scratch cooking had become our way of life. The unrelenting “soda question” was a different story; “our friends drink it” was a constant refrain so finally one day I said “fuck it, I’ll make one myself.“ And so I did, by adding my cranberry syrup to club soda. I said, “Here, try this.” And that was that. Fruitations, born from a strong love, still makes the best soda around. Just ask me.
Don’t mess with Mother Nature and don’t mess with this Mother’s nature.
